UCLA – BluePrint
In areas as diverse as poverty, school reform, public architecture, public health, crime and environmental protection, UCLA already is leading public knowledge on matters of vital importance. Home to some of the most intelligent and socially committed professors, administrators, students and alumni in the world, they are eager to help try out new ideas and shape the society in which they live and work. It is fundamental to UCLA’s purpose to educate and participate in its community and society. Our goal was to strengthen UCLA’s connection to the civic life of Los Angeles and tout our expertise in matters important to the Los Angeles area. And our solution was develop a unique publication presenting research done at UCLA or by UCLA faculty on important state and regional issues. The publication was to be led by Jim Newton, a well-known figure in the civic life of Los Angeles and California. Enter: BluePrint. Blueprint is journalism with purpose. It’s a magazine about ideas for improving Los Angeles and California — and about the people and institutions charged with doing that. It is meant to bring those together: to give civic leaders the best and most current thinking in public affairs research, and to expose academicians to the complexities and frailties of governance to promote conversations and solutions.
